Scholarship Description
The Friends of Volo Bog is offering one scholarship of $1,000 for an
outstanding student who is currently enrolled in an accredited college
or university pursuing an environmental career.
The Friends of Volo Bog (FOVB) is a not-for-profit organization,
established in 1983, and dedicated to the preservation of the area’s
natural heritage, maintenance of site facilities, and advancement of
educational programming at Volo Bog State Natural Area.
To be eligible for this scholarship the applicant must have a
permanent residence in Lake County or McHenry County, must have
graduated from a Lake County or McHenry County high school, be
currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, and have a
minimum B average . The applicant should be planning to enter a career
directly related to preserving the environment. Examples of acceptable
disciplines of study include, but are not limited to, environmental
biology, wildlife management, environmental law, ecology, and geology.

The Board of Directors of the Friends of Volo Bog will appoint a
committee to decide on the recipient of the scholarship. Selection
will be based upon evidence of scholarship, career plans, and the
essay included in the application.
Applications will be accepted through February 23, 2007. Application
packets are available at high school guidance offices or Volo Bog
State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Road, Ingleside, or call
(815) 344-1294. The completed application must be postmarked February
18. The recipient and school will be notified by mail during the
following April. Students are encouraged to submit the applications
early.
