Scholarship Description
This contest is open to all students of all national backgrounds
that are currently studying in the United States. Eligible contestants
must be middle or high school (7th—12th) students in a public,
private, alternative, parochial, or home-study program. Previous
scholarship recipients are not eligible. Eligibility Requirements:
Open to all students studying with-in the United States. Recent high
school graduates are eligible to participate as long as the “deadline”
of the current contest falls with-in a 12-month calendar after
graduation
Objective:
Write an essay and focus on the theme (see website for details), which
include the history, and purpose of observance; as well as, how you
intend to observe this day. Essays will be evaluated and assigned
points of equal value based on the following criteria:
Demonstrated Knowledge of the Origin of the Stated theme,
Theme Development,
Clarity of Ideas,
and Mechanics (Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation, Sentence Structure,
etc.)
How to Enter:
All entries must be postmarked or submitted electronically by Friday
November 14, 2008. No exceptions will be made to late entries. Please

Contest Rules:
1. The essay MUST be the contestant’s original work. (Finalists’ essay
will be scanned for plagiarism)
2. Contestants may enter one time only. (Per contest)
3. Essays must be a 1500 word minimum. (Title and footnotes do not
contribute to the overall word count)
4. Quotations may be used sparingly if sources are plainly identified.
(Quotations must be used for support, and should not be used in place
of your original work)
5. All entries must be typewritten, double spaced and in English.
6. Contestants may not identify themselves, their schools, cities, or
state with-in the essay.
7. Contestants must demonstrate knowledge of the origin and the impact
of the subject theme.
8. Entry must be postmarked, or electronically received by the stated
deadline as indicated above. Electronic entries must be sent in MS
Word file as an attachment.
