Description |
The mission of the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society (OW-USS) is
to; promote educational activities associated with the underwater world.
There is one scholarship for North American citizens and one for
European citizens. Applicants must be certified SCUBA divers and will
need to pass a diving physical prior to acceptance of Scholarship.
The scholarships provide a hands-on introduction to underwater and other
aquatic-related endeavors for young persons with an interest in
underwater–related disciplines. This permits career decisions to be
based on real work experiences. The selected Scholars are perceived to
have the potential to make a significant contribution to the underwater
world, even though he or she may not have yet chosen a specific career
path. These unique scholarships provide a year of experiences and rare
opportunities to meet and work with many highly respected individuals
and organizations while the Scholar is still in the formative stages of
his or her career. These contacts and experiences allow the Scholar to
better define career goals and give the Scholar a head start toward a
productive and successful life contributing to the underwater world or
associated disciplines. These scholarships provide experiences, which
can influence the Scholar’s life and career, often toward disciplines
addressing the protection, enhancement, and survival of our marine and
freshwater environments.
The maximum cash amount of any one scholarship is currently $20,000 for
the North American Scholarship and £15,000 Sterling for the European
Scholarship.
The Scholarship funds are released to the Scholars as reimbursement for
approved transportation and living expenses. The Scholars must submit a
complete accounting for all expenditures. Logs, journals, financial
reports, and other communications are mandatory and must be submitted
monthly to the Society for review by the Board of Directors and the
Executive Committee. |
