Scholarship Description
The Surfrider Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit environmental
organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's
oceans, waves and beaches, for all people, through Conservation,
Activism, Research and Education. Specific attention is placed on the
preservation and enhancement of public access to coastal areas;
maintenance and improvement of water quality; and the preservation of
surf breaks.
Three merit based awards will be made to students who are members in
good standing of the Surfrider Foundation, annually, based upon
available funds and exceptional applications:
- one for $2000 at the Undergraduate level
- one for $3000 at the Masters level
- one for $5000 at the Ph.D. level
Eligibility Criteria:
A. Must be a member in good standing of the Surfrider Foundation and
embrace the spirit of the Mission and Guiding Principles of the
Surfrider Foundation, which guide and govern the activities of the
organization. Must be a student enrolled in an accredited College or
University (in the U.S. or Internationally) during the upcoming
academic year. Undergraduates (of at least Junior standing) with a
minimum GPA of 3.4 for all coursework, and graduate students (minimum
9 credits completed) with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6 are
eligible. Both full and part time students are welcome to apply.
B. Clearly demonstrate interest in coastal environmental science and
issues relevant to the Surfrider Foundation Mission as well as
contribution(s) to advancing the public interest in such issues, as
evidenced by both of the following.
1. A major field of study pertaining to oceanography, marine affairs,
environmental sciences, public policy, community planning or natural
resources.
2. Participation in cooperative or independent research, environmental
activities or work experience related to the above mentioned
disciplines.
