The US Physics Team promotes and demonstrates academic excellence through
preparation and participation in the International Physics Olympiad. The
American Association of Physics Teachers sponsors this physics program to
encourage students' understanding of an exciting range of topics within
the very wide field of physics through competition and courses embracing
both theory and experiment. This selection process begins in early January
of each year when high school teachers nominate their best students in a
national exam. Top students are selected for the semi-final round. A
second set of tests, student transcripts, and letters of recommendation
are used as the basis for selection of the final 24 members of the U.S.
Physics Team. These students, representing schools from all over the
United States, travel to the University of Maryland-College Park at the
end of May for the annual U.S. Physics Team Training Camp. At the end of
the training camp, five students are chosen to represent the United States
at the International Physics Olympiad (IPO) held at the National Institute
of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
